The district court in Espoo on Monday sentenced 20 international drug smugglers to imprisonment in different terms.

At the centre of the trial was two major batches of drugs, one smuggled from the Netherlands into Finland, and the other was caught in Poland.

In the cars used for smuggling, nearly 30 kg of amphetamines and more than 20,000 ecstasy tablets were uncovered. Sentencing also covered the sending of thousands of Subutex tablets from France and their dissemination in Finland.

The unconditional prison sentences of several years were handed down to 20 people. The longest sentence was 13 years. The court also dismissed many charges due to lack of evidence.

The Finnish authorities worked with the Dutch police on the drug bust. In the Netherlands, the National Bureau of Investigation discovered a wholesale warehouse with more than 1800 kilograms of hashish, and enough precursors for 330 kg of amphetamines.

The international gang members came from eight countries: Finland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Estonia, Lithuania, Somalia and Iraq, reported Yle.
