Keskusta (Centre Party) Member of European Parliament PaavoVäyrynen wants a referendum to be held on Finland’s membership in the European Union.
Väyrynen has laid down a citizens’ initiative which is now open for signature at the website Kansalaisaloite.fi.
Väyrynen is also planning to collect signatures at public events in the autumn.
The initiative will go to parliament, if it receives more than 50,000 signatures.
Väyrynen said the citizens’ initiative and a possible referendum will provide an opportunity to discuss Finland’s relationship in the Euro area.
“The Finnish people should have the opportunity to resolve whether to continue in the euro area or whether to join other Nordic countries by introducing a parallel currency,” said Väyrynen.
