Holding referendums on already established or planned reception centres for asylum seekers has been suggested in at least six municipalities.

An appeal to hold referendums in Salo, Jyväskylä, Seinäjoki, Forssa, Tornio and Kirkkonummi has been lodged on the Kuntalaisaloite.fi website.

The highest number of 400 signatories has supported the move for organising a referendum on the planned reception centre in Salo. Other initiatives in this regard have garnered about 40-200 signatures.

An initiative calling for organising a municipal referendum is handled by the municipality only if 5 per cent of the municipal residents entitled to vote sign it.

In case of a city the size of Salo based on the 2013 population figures, the number of initiative signatories has be 2,700.

Besides the referendum, the initiative often calls the municipality to carry out an assessment on the benefits or the disadvantages of the asylum seekers as well as its impact on peoples’ safety and security feelings.
