Foreign Minister Timo Soini and his visiting Swedish counterpart Margot Wallström on Tuesday underscored the necessity for a closer cooperation among the Nordic countries in dealing with refugees and immigration issues.

At a meeting in Helsinki, Soini and Wallström agreed that the Nordic foreign ministers should address the issues together.

Soini said such a meeting could take place on the sideline of the EU foreign ministers’ meeting or the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting.

Wallström brought the concerns of Sweden and the future of unaccompanied children refugees.

According to her, as much as 30 per cent of the unaccompanied minor refugees who come to Europe end up in Sweden.

“It is unacceptable if we cannot get assistance from other EU countries. We want to give [the children] a good start in life,” Wallström said.
