Photo – Lehtikuva. Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Sunday said the possibility of terrorist attacks inside Finland cannot be completely ruled out.
In an interview with the national broadcaster YLE, the premier said the government is trying to find a legislative solution to the security risk.
Sipilä said his party Keskusta at a meeting in Mikkeli during the weekend discussed the issue of foreign fighters and observed that leaving Finland to fight in or against a foreign army should be a criminal offence and recruiting for extremism needs to be addressed.
He said the matter of foreign fighters has also been discussed quite a lot inside the government.
“We are trying to find a legislative solution of the matter, both for those leaving and returning, as they pose a security risk,” Sipilä said, adding that the issue is not legally simple.
“Terrorist attacks do not necessarily require a lot of planning. The French attacks were carefully planned out, but small attacks do not necessarily require the support of a large organisation,” Sipilä said.
