The refugee reception centre in Tornio has registered about 14,000 refugees since opening its doors two months ago while the police have performed about 1200 asylum interviews, sources at the po-lice and immigration department said.

On Monday, the centre received about 50 more refugees, most of whom were Afghans and about half were families.

According to police, expectations for Tuesday were about the same.

At the beginning, more than 500 refugees arrived at the center everyday.

On the eastern border at Inari's Raja-Jooseppi, 12 refugees arrived on Monday and were transported to the Tornio reception centre.

There have been about a hundred new refugee reception centers opened this autumn in Finland.

So far, enough space has been found for accommodating asylum seekers, but the flow of refugees has not ceased, and the Finnish Immigration Service is prepared to accommodate them in tents maintained by the Finnish Red Cross Society.
