Two teenage boys were arrested at Kempele on Monday on suspicion of raping a teenage girl.

A local 14-year-old girl was raped at around 10:30 pm on Monday evening.

The Finnish commercial broadcaster MTV reported that its sources suggested that the suspects were asylum seekers from Afghanistan who were detained late on Monday at a reception centre in Kempele.

The police on Tuesday, however, did not confirm that the detained suspects aged 15 and 17 were asylum seekers.

“Matters related to foreigners, especially if it is about asylum seekers, are confidential information,” Detective Inspector Seppo Leinonen told the news agency STT.

According to the police, the teenage girl happened to be in the company of two young men of foreign background, and at least one of the men raped the girl outside Asemantie.

Two locals arrived at the scene after the incident and called for help. The men did not witness the rape incident.

Leinonen said the police have no information on whether there were any eye witnesses.

The arrest was made after the police dog patrol followed the trail of the suspects to an apartment where the two teenage boys were found.
