There are nine aspirants for the post of the chief of Finnish Security Police (supo), sources at the Ministry of Interior said.

The acting head, Antti Pelttari is also among the persons interested in the post.

Supo’s deputy chiefs Petri Knape and Oli Kolstela, Hämeenlinna prison director Samuli Laulumaa have also applied. The appointment to the post has a maximum limit of five years.

The job was opened when former Supo chief Ilkka Salmi was appointed director of security for the European Commission in November.

He has long been on a leave of absence and has worked as the director of the EU’s Intelligence Centre.

Antti Pelttari was also nominated recently as the new secretary-general of parliament.

He was considered a strong candidate, but parliament eventually chose Maija-Leena Paavola for the post.
