An Iraqi man has been arrested in Finland on suspicion of war crimes, reported Finnish media on Friday.

The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) started to investigate the case at the beginning of this week, and took the suspect into custody on Thursday.

The suspect is a 23-year-old Iraqi man, alleged to have participated in battles in Tikrit, Iraq, in 2015.

Jari Räty, Detective Chief Inspector of NBI, told the Finnish commercial television broadcaster MTV that the suspect has been in the Iraqi army, which was involved in wars against the terrorist organization IS. The man is alleged of illegal conducts in wars.

A war crime can be sentenced up to life imprisonment in Finland. Räty said that the investigated crime is not the toughest.

The police officer did not disclose more details. He also rejected to tell if the alleged is an asylum seeker in Finland
