Hautala, 43, has been serving as the president's foreign advisor since 2012.
Hautala's tenure will start at the beginning of September when the current ambas-sador's term expires.
The position of the ambassador to Moscow is considered one of Finland's most important diplomatic missions.
The President also made formal the appointment of other diplomatic heads put forward by the state.
Counsellor of Foreign Affairs Eero Suominen was named the head of diplomatic mission in Seoul, while Foreign Affairs Counsellors Anu Saarela and Timo Heino were appointed the heads of diplomatic missions in Tel Aviv and Nicosia respec-tively.
