A young man was killed on Saturday at Joensuuntie in Kuopio in a collision between a car and a timber truck, rescue services sources said.

The driver of the car, a man born in 1988 in Kuopio, was the victim of the accident. He was the only person in the car.

The vehicles collided at about 9.00am on the Suotaipale stretch of the road. There was melted ice on the road. Both cars were driven off the road during the collision. The truck driver survived with minor injuries.

The police are investigating the reason for the collision. The passenger car was driving in the opposite lane during the collision.

In another accident, a man died in a house fire on Saturday in Ivalo, said the police.

He lived in the house alone. Rescue services received notification about the fire at around 8.00 in the morning.

According to rescue services, the fire destroyed about a 100 square metres of the inside of the house, rendering it unliveable. 

The police will continue investigation into the cause of the fire and the man’s death.
