Local Government and Public Reform Minister Anu Vehviläinen on Saturday said the first direct provincial elections will take place perhaps in 2021.

In an interview with the national broadcaster YLE, the minister said as an alternative, municipal councils would choose the first representatives of the regional councils.

Elections to the regional and municipal councils are scheduled to be held in 2021.

Holding both the elections in October 2017 now faces constitutional complications.

The alternative was proposed by a committee of secretaries of political parties.

The Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party-NCP), one of the components of the three-party alliance government, welcomes the idea, said the deputy chairman of the Kokoomus parliamentary group, Outi Mäkelä.

“Vehviläinen’s proposal is a pretty good start. Then municipal elections need not be moved,” said Mäkelä.

The Kokoomus leader said from the perspective of the Kokoomus, the most important thing in the reforms is to advance services and social and healthcare solutions.
