A Court of Appeal in Helsinki toughened previous sentences of three men accused of gang raping a woman outside the Tapanila rail station in March 2015.

A group of five young five men followed the woman from the train station and started to harass her. The woman who was walking home was then raped by three of the men.

The Court of Appeal overturned the earlier offence of rape pointing out that nature of the offence was aggravated. According to the Court, the rape was aggravated because the perpetrators were many and that the offence was executed in a very humiliating manner.

The appellate court sentenced one of the convicts to two years and four months in prison overturning the earlier conviction of a year and four months in prison. The other convicts were each handed one year and nine months suspended prison term. The District Court had earlier handed the two a suspended sentence of one year.

The two convicts who received suspended sentences during the earlier judge-ment were minors. One of the convict is still a minor.
