A wartime explosive device was discovered in a construction site in Mikkeli on Thursday, said the Eastern Finland police.

The police said the explosive was found in the Mikkeli sports park area at about 10 in the morning.

According to the police, the explosive device was not a danger to people, but the police cordoned off the area and advised people not to travel in the vicinity of the sports park during the clearance work.

The isolation took half the day.

The explosive was found about 2.5 metres underground during excavation work near the corner of Anni Swanin Katu and Nuijamiestenkatu.

According to the police, it is less than one-metre-long and 20 centimetres wide.

The explosive was transferred to the Karkialampi area for disposal.

The police, rescue services and the Defence Forces all cooperated in the operation.
