Anna-Maja Henriksson was elected the chairperson of the Suomen ruotsalainen kansanpuolue (Swedish People’s Party of Finland-RKP) on Sunday.
She will succeed the outgoing Chairman Carl Haglund.
Henriksson becomes the first ever woman to lead the party bagging the highest 133 votes against lawmaker Anders Adlercreutz and the chair of the party’s youth front, Ida Schauman at the party council held in Turku.
Henriksson was touted as the favourite even before the elections. She has previously served as the chair of the party’s parliamentary group.
Henriksson thanked Haglund for his service during his tenure as the party chief and said the party would aim to win the next elections.
“Who knows, perhaps we will win the presidential elections,” Henriksson said, drawing laughter from the crowd.
A native of Pietarsaari, Henriksson has been a member of parliament since 2007.
She served as the justice minister during the previous parliamentary term.
