The Finnish Environmental Institute (SYKE) and the Finnish Border Guard are involved in an oil detection operation in the North Sea, in Norway’s Stavanger area.
The four-day sea mission has measured a variety of oils in the water totalling 208 cubic metres, and the oil spill response vessels are collecting oil from the sea.
In addition, the oil is monitored by satellites, flight controls and unmanned drones. The mission ends June 16.
The North Sea has suffered large-scale oil spills, driving the need for better preparation.
Practising using oil spills is one such method, because the effectiveness of the collection of spilled oil provides direct information, the Environment Institute and Border Guard stated.
