Photo – Lehtikuva. A teenage boy was killed in a road accident in Kälviä, Kokkola early Tuesday morning, the police say.
Four other boys aged around 15 were also in the ill-fated van and all of them were wounded in the crash.
The injured were taken to the Central Ostrobothnia Central Hospital in Kokkola, and according to the police, their conditions are not critical.
“The preliminary interview has already been taken in the hospital early this morning,” said Ostrobothnia Police Detective Chief Inspector Anders Åfors to the Finnish news agency STT.
The five teenagers were driving on Kajaanintie heading towards Kannus at six in the morning, when the driver lost control on the van, which turned turtle. It was a minivan with no actual seats in the rear, only a homemade seat, said Åfors, adding that the impact of the crash ejected a boy born in 2000 out of van at a high speed, killing him on the spot.
The police suspect the driver was speeding, but they do not think alcohol played a role in the accident. According to Åfors, the boys were from the Iisalmi region of North Savo.
One of the injured passengers was born in 2002 and another in 2001, while the wounded driver was born in 2000. He is suspected of aggravated reckless driving, transporting a vehicle illegally, and either manslaughter or aggravated manslaughter.
