Earlier, the Kainuu Border Guard announced that one person had been suspected of illegally crossing the border from Finland to Russia via Suomussalmi.

The search for the person began in the early hours on Saturday.

Kainuu Border Guard General Director Lieutenant Colonel Heikki Koponen told the news agency STT that the matter will be investigated in conjunction with the Russian authorities.

If the person was on the wanted list and crossed the border illegally into Russia, the matter will be investigated on both sides of the border.

“If the suspected person is not supposed to be in Russia, the person will probably be deported to Finland after some time,” Koponen said.

According to Koponen, similar situations where people breach state borders happen a few times each year.

The number has remained almost unchanged as last year.

The information about the nationality of the person is not yet available, said Koponen.
