Thousands of people on Saturday staged a demonstration in Helsinki protesting against the cuts in many sectors in the draft budget agreed by the government for next year.

The police estimated that about 3,000 demonstrators gathered at the Helsinki Railway Square on Saturday evening and brought out a procession.

The procession marched through Eteläranta and headed towards the Sinebrychoff Park.

The demonstration passed on peacefully, except for minor cases of disorderly conduct.

The crowd, however, quickly dispersed due to the rainy weather.

The demonstration was organised by Joukkovoima-liike. According to the group, the procession passed by the Confederation of Finnish Industries-EK headquarters, because the government listens more to the EK than the lawmakers.
