A bus carrying a group of youths caught fire and was completely burned down on Saturday morning in Pälkäneellä, said the Pirkanmaa rescue department.

There were 33 passengers and the driver in the chartered bus travelling from Lahti towards Tampere, said the chief fire fighter, Jarno Majaniemi.

Some of the passengers inhaled smoke. But, none was injured, said Majaniemi. According to the fire chief, the entourage was heading to join a cheerleading contest.

Majaniemi said the bus was probably on a stop at the Aapiskukko service station, when smoke started to come out from its rear, and then suddenly the bus flared up.

Majaniemi said the fire was probably caused by a technical fault in the engine.

The young people continued with their journey to Tampere in another bus.
