Photo – Lehtikuva. The Finnish Border Guard on Wednesday announced that it had completed the preliminary investigation into the last week’s airspace violations by Russian fighters.
Finland sent data from the preliminary investigation to Russia and asked for clarification of the airspace violations.
Mikko Kinnunen, head of Security and Policy Management at the Foreign Ministry, told the Finnish news agency STT that this is normal procedure in all suspected airspace violations.
The cases will not proceed to the consideration of charges, since it is not possible to bring charges against anyone.
The airspace violations were not explained by weather conditions or other air traffic.
The preliminary investigation confirmed that two Russian Air Force Su-27 fighter jets crossed into Finnish territory off the shore of Porvoo on October 6 at around 16:45 p.m. and then a little later at 21:30 p.m.
The fighter jets came as close as 1.2 km and 1.9 kilometres from Finnish land.
According to the Russian Border Guard, Russian military aircraft are operating in the Gulf of Finland.
The Finnish Air Force contacted both Russian jets that breached Finnish airspace. Finnish Hornets identified both foreign aircraft.
In this past year, the Finnish Border Guard has investigated three cases of territorial violations.
In addition to the events, a Danish helicopter is suspected of flying over Finnish airspace above the Gulf of Finland in June.
