The 2006 Gothenburg European Championship gold medal in hammer will at last be awarded to Olli-Pekka Karjalainen in the Helsinki Olympic Stadium on August 31.
The medal will be hung around the neck of the now retired Finnish hammer thrower during the Finland-Sweden athletics international meeting in Helsinki.
Karjailen became the European Champion after the IAAF - International Association of Athletics Federations had decided in spring to strip Ivan Tskikhan of Belarus of the gold medal he won at the event.
Tskikhan’s samples from 2004-2006 came back positive for doping.
“When I heard about the gold medal it brought good feeling of course. At the same time, getting the medal afterwards was a little confusing.
“Still I feel that I have earned this gold medal after years of hard work,” said Karjalainen in a release from the Finnish Amateur Athletic Association.
