FTimes – STT Report, Apr 23

Protesters on Friday disrupted a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) event led by European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmström and Finnish Foreign trade Minister Lenita Toivakka at Aalto University in Helsinki.

About a dozen protesters sang protest songs at the event before being ejected from the hall.

“People say no to TTIP,” the demonstrators declared.

TTIP is a free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States. The TTIP negotiations is currently underway.

The objective of the agreement is to lower trade barriers like tariffs.

The goal of the agreement is also to harmonise the standards and open up public procurement to competition.

According to TTIP proponents, the direct benefits of the agreement to the EU would be up to 70 billion euros by 2027.

On the other hand, opponents argue that the agreement would lead to disappearance of jobs from their countries to elsewhere.

The criticism of the agreement has risen as a result of the presidential election campaigns in the United States.

Republican candidate front runner Donald Trump is staunchly opposed to the agreement. Opposition towards the agreement can also be found on the left side of the political spectrum.
