Finland fulfilled its emission reduction commitment made in the Kyoto Protocol for the first period, said Statistics Finland’s greenhouse gas emission data.
The emissions for the period 2008-2012 were 5% below the amount specified for Finland.
Finland’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2012 fell by 5.9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the previous year and corresponded to 61 million tonnes, the data says.
The emissions decreased in all sectors compared to the previous year; the energy sector recorded the highest cut of 10% or 5.5 million tonnes of CO2.
The cut was a result of imported electricity, wood and domestic hydropower replacing fossil fuels and peat in power generation.
There has also been a clear decline in the use of fossil fuels and peat in the manufacturing sector.
