The ministry on Friday discussed the possibility of introducing limitations on the right of the elderly to drive under different circumstances, the sources said.
They authorities discussed the possibility of narrowing down the driving right to a specific time of the day or particular areas for them.
Safety measures are required for their survival when traffic system is weak, as the health standards for driving is already minimum, said Juha Valtonen, head of research of the ministry.
Valtonen said, as controlling the driving rights of others is hard, the reservation could be applicable for the elderly to ensure their safety, although some of them would live in quiet rural areas.
According to the ministry, the restrictions could relate to, for example, trips within a certain radius of the place of residence or a local-authority area. The right to drive could be limited to daytime.
The EU directive on driving licences allows for the restriction procedure and it is in use in some EU countries, said the sources.
