Jyrki Katainen, who had just officially stepped down as prime minister and been asked to take care of the interim cabinet, was appointed as Finland's interim EU Commissioner on Wednesday.
The government decided to nominate Katainen as Finland's candidate for the period of July 1 to October 31 until the term of current European Commission expires, the government said in a press release.
He will replace the current Finnish member of Olli Rehn, the current commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, whose term will end on July 1.
Katainen's post as the prime minister in the government will be replaced by newly elected National Coalition Party chair Alexander Stubb.
