One fatality from drowning during the midsummer celebrations was reported by the police after a woman met her death in Eurajoki Satakunta on Saturday evening.
The woman born in 1952 was found dead in front of a lakeside sauna. She had likely been swimming or taking a bath on the beach, according to the police.
This was the first case of midsummer drowning during this year’s celebrations.
This is the only year since 1989 in which only a single case of drowning is reported during the midsummer celebrations, confirmed Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation (SUH).
On average about nine people drown annually.
The year 1999 was by far the worst midsummer in which 20 people drowned.
In 2011, only two persons drowned during the midsummer.
Saturday’s drowning had not come to light till Sunday morning. Pärla Salomaa, secretary-general of SUH said the chilly weather might explain why the drowning had not been noticed before, as many people had stayed put indoors.
In another incident, one person died on Sunday afternoon after fire ravaged through a detached house in Pori.
Rescue and emergency services managed to bring the fire under the control after they had received the alarm at 4:00 pm.
One person was found dead in the house, according to the police services.
At one point it was feared that the fire would pose harm to the people living nearby due to its ferocity.
Police are investigating the cause of the fire.
