The party governing body in an extraordinary congress on Saturday rejected the proposal of holding an early election for the post by a narrow margin.
Although party leaders in a council on August 31, 2013 re-elected Interior Minister Räsänen as party chief for the next two years, a faction of the party raised the demand for bringing change in the party top post before the next parliamentary polls scheduled for next spring.
They wanted to replace Räsänen by the winner in the European Parliamentary polls Sari Essayah, but Essayah expressed support for the existing party chair.
Ten out of the 20 leaders gathered in the congress voted for Räsänen while the rest opposed. The casting vote by party chair Räsänen made the decision to dismiss the proposal for holding early polls for the party chair, reported Yle.
