Eleven new species of the family of flies called Tanhukärpänen known as dance flies in English and Empis Borealis in Latin were discovered in Lapland last year, said Metsähallitus, a state enterprise that administers state-owned land and water areas.
Four of the discovered species are entirely new ones known to science.
The insects were collected from protected areas in Lapland last year.
According to Metsähallitus, one of the species is a totally new one in Europe. In addition, a number of species were discovered for the first time in Lapland.
Dance flies received the name because they fly back and forth from one place to another in order to seek a partner.
There are about 300 species of dance flies in Finland.
