A man who was aboard Viking Grace cruise ship is thought to have ended up in the sea in the Åland archipelago in the early hours of Friday.
A search was initiated but was eventually called off after it turned out to be fruitless.
The investigation was still underway on Friday evening, but the authorities do not suspect involvement of crime in the incident.
The police said they had not yet received the recordings of the surveillance cameras.
The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre -MRCC Turku were notified about the incident at 2 am on Friday.
The search was launched immediately with the help of Viking Grace, Viking Galaxy and rescue boats.
A border guard helicopter from Turku, the patrol from the Åland coast guard station and the Åland voluntary lifeboat society were alerted to the operation.
The man was not found despite the search efforts.
