The number of murders committed in the country is fewer than ever before.

Never before in the country’s history is there a known episode of long uninterrupted period in which the number of murders has been as low as currently, reported the Finnish language daily Sunnuntaisuomalainen.

Over the period 2010 to 2014, the number of murders in each year was less than 2 per 100,000 inhabitants.

The falling trend began in 1990s and complies with the pan-European and western development.

Historian Heikki Ylikangas points out that the most effective way to reduce the murder rate is to narrow income inequality.

The decline in fatal crimes can also be attributed to the aging of the population, change in societal values and behavioural culture.

Information on murders committed in the country has been gathered since 1750.
