The expansive drug allegations and breach of official position case brought against former head of Helsinki police drug unit Jari Aarnio was heard by the District Court of Helsinki on Tuesday.
The prosecutors presented written evidence before the court regarding the so-called barrel ring alleged to have been involved in the trafficking of over a hundred kilos of hashish from the Netherlands to Tuusula in April 2011.
The prosecutors called the court to sentence Aarnio to 13 years in prison for his involvement in smuggling of nearly a tonne of hashish, a charge which Aarnio denies.
Aarnio’s defence, however, said Aarnio was not in the picture and was not needed by the smuggling ring.
Aarnio’s lawyer, Riitta Leppiniemi, presented before the court written evidence of recordings of previous pre-trial investigation of the barrel ring case.
The evidence, according to the defence, shows that the same group had earlier trafficked a consignment to Finland without Aarnio.
At least one of the dispatches mentioned by Leppiniemi was a barrel, but the case was dismissed due to lack of evidence.
Aarnio who maintains his innocence has been in pre-trial detention since November 2013.
