A Helsinki resident was detained illegally for 175 days, equivalent to almost half a year, reported the Finnish commercial broadcaster MTV.

The man was arrested for drugs-related assault in 2014. His case was supposed to be heard at a district court in February 2015. However, he failed to appear before the court. The court sentenced him in absentia and he was also placed on the wanted list.

The police arrested him at the beginning of May last year and took him to the Vantaa prison.

Neither the police nor the prison authorities informed the district court about the detention of the man. His lawyer was also unaware of the situation.

The issue came to light at the end of October when he expressed a desire to change his lawyer.

The new lawyer expressed his surprise at the situation at the district court and, as a result, the 33-year-old man was released immediately.

According to the court, the man did not understand that he needed to ask for release or make a request to process the matter.
