The government has decided to allocate EUR 200 million development package for the Helsinki Airport in the supplementary budget, scheduled to be announced by the Ministry of Finance today.

The Transport and Communication ministry sources said that the allocation would be given to Finavia, the authority responsible for maintaining airport networks and the air navigation system in Finland with the view to expand the infrastructure of the airport.

“The government is supporting the expansion works of the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport to keep it secure,” the Finance Minister Jutta Urpilainen said on Thursday.

Finavia has been negotiating with the government to get the EUR 200 million for the Helsinki Airport expansion project undertaken by the Finavia at a cost of total EUR 900 million, said sources.

The expansion works are scheduled to be implemented by this decade, Finavia sources said.

“The financial support from the government will help the authority to implement the expansion project of the airport,” said Mika Mäkilä of the transport council in the ministry of transport and communication.

Finavia sources said that the Helsinki-Vantaa airport is the only profitable airport of the country which deals with on an average 10 million to 15 million passengers annually.

Most of the airports are incurring loss while the Oulu airport, which deals with yearly one million passengers, is on the margin.

Earlier, Finavia said that the medium-size airports of the country are not commercially viable due to the high labour cost.

Mentioning the Kuopio airport as an example, the authority said about 10 flights are operated between Koupio and Helsinki every day and for that a hundred workers are to be engaged at the airport.

The ratio of manpower is almost double of the average manpower structure estimated by Finavia.

Pointing out the income and expenditure of a medium-size airport, the authority said that Finavia on an average earns EUR 3.6 millions from a medium-size airport and spends EUR 4.4m for it.

Of the EUR 4.4 million expenditure, more than EUR 2 million is spent for paying the employees.
