Holiday home property tax likely to be increased by up to 40 percent next year, reported Finnish language daily Helsingin Sanomat.

Tax increase for a single cottage owner could be average 37 percent.

The tax increase would, however, not apply to all cottage owners, said the newspaper.

The municipalities would make independent decisions on the matter. It is estimated that property tax on approximately 300,000 cottage owners will be rising.

The amendment is included in a bill which has been sent for consultation.

According to the bill, the goal is to raise 19 million euros through tax increases on leisure dwellings for the period 2016-2017.

Vapaa-ajan asukkaiden liitto, the association for leisure home residents has termed the tax increase plan as unfair.

According to the association, leisure homes are already taxed heavily compared to permanent residential buildings.

The permanent housing property tax will increase in 2017.
