Women are increasingly becoming the bread winners in their families, reported Finnish language daily Keskisuomalainen.

Already in every one out three families comprising of two adults, it is a woman who bears the greatest responsibility of providing for the family, said the report. This is equivalent to 400,000 households.

Women are mostly the bread winners in families with no children, revealed the report.

The report which was based on Statistics Finland data revealed that the difference between wages earned by men and women has at the time increased.

The change could be a sign of decreased livelihood for families since women on average earn less than men.

“If only one parent goes to work in a low income family, it is usually the moth-er,” Minna Salmi, head of the research of the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) told the newspaper.
