The Swedish telecom operator TeliaSonera intends to drop the Sonera brand from its name.

According to a general meeting invitation published on Monday, the new name will be Telia Company. The annual general meeting will be held on April 12.

TeliaSonera was founded in 2002, when the Swedish firm Telia acquired the Finnish firm Sonera.

The sale rescued Sonera, which at the time was facing difficulties because of the acquisition of a third-generation network licence from Germany for 3.5 billion, which ultimately turned out to be worthless.

TeliaSonera has used the brand Telia in Sweden and Sonera in Finland.

Sonera has its roots in the state postal and telecommunication services. The company’s name was changed to Sonera in 1998 in connection with a partial privatisation and listing on the stock exchange.

The Finnish state still ranks as one of TeliaSonera’s largest shareholders, even though the state-owned investment company Solidium has sold its shares in recent years.

TeliaSonera shares still have the second largest market value in Solidium’s stock portfolio.

The Swedish business daily Dagens Industri first reported the news.
