The City of Rovaniemi is working on signing letters of intent on cooperation with two Asian cities, reported Finnish language newspaper Lapin Kansa.

One of the cities is Linyi. A metropolis with about 10 million residents, Linyi is located on the Chinese east coast halfway between Beijing and Shanghai. Trade and industry are the city’s most important economic activities.

The goal of the planned letter of intent with Linyi is to pave way for companies in the Rovaniemi area to conduct business with companies in Linyi. In addition, it is aimed at attracting Chinese investors to explore opportunities in Rovaniemi.

Besides economic and trade cooperation, the accord also targets cooperation in culture, education, science and technology as well environmental cooperation.

The second cooperation partner is the municipality of Hwacheon, a South Korean town with a population of 23,000 residents.

Located on the northern part of the country, the most significant economic activity in the Hwacheon area is tourism.

The town’s main tourism-related event is the annual winter festival which falls on January. The festival focuses on winter fishing.

Development of tourism and marketing of winter towns top the areas of cooperation with Hwacheon.

The letters of intent are of general nature and do not oblige any party to conform to anything.

The agreements are up for discussion on June 7 at the Rovaniemi economic department.
