Mechanical engineering company Wärtsilä on Wednesday announced the layoff of 183 full-time employees following the conclusion of co-determination talks.
 
At the beginning of the negotiations, the company had planned to reduce 270 jobs.
 
Most of the layoffs will occur in Vaasa, where 172 jobs will be cut. In addition, the company is laying off eight workers in Turku and three in Helsinki. The redundancies affect 100 employees and the rest staff.
 
The company said it will give termination notices by midsummer. The negotiations also allow for the possibility of forced unpaid holidays. 
 
Wärtsilä has over 3500 employees in Finland and more than 18400 worldwide. Overall, the company is aiming to reduce 550 jobs and save 50 million euros annually.
