The police have begun to look into the conditions of Thai berry-pickers at a farm in Hankasalmi, reported the Finnish newspaper Keskisuomalainen.

According to the newspaper, the police performed an extension operation on Wednesday morning at the berry-picking farm drawing a lot of attention. The berry company’s payroll includes nearly 200 Thai employees, the newspaper said.

The senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Eila Koivuniemi told the newspaper that the operation was related to an investigation which the police launched in mid-September due to an investigation request.

Koivuniemi refused to divulge what crimes are suspected until the pre-trial investigation was complete. The lead investigator also did not describe what the Thai workers’ conditions were.

According to the newspaper, the people of Hankasalmi were wondering about the traffic at the town hall on Wednesday. Koivuniemi revealed that there were interrogations taking place.

The investigation, including among other things interrogations, will continue for weeks. According to Keskisuomalainen, no one has been detained in the case.
