The Finnish troops deployed in Afghanistan under the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) will end their operations there at the end of 2014.

The Finnish soldiers, however, will take part in the planning of the NATO-led follow-on mission to ISAF and continue with their participation in the operations taking place in Western Balkans, the Horn of Africa, and Sahel.

The Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy in a meeting in presence of President Sauli Niinistö on Friday discussed the issues related to Finland’s participation in international crisis management, said a government press release.

A total of 145 Finnish troops are now deployed to NATO’s ISAF mission in Afghanistan.

The meeting also discussed the military crisis management operation in which 400 Finnish soldiers are engaged right now.

Almost half of them were deployed earlier in South Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and in Middle East under the UN Truce Supervision Organisation.

The meeting was also informed that 110 Finnish experts, 40 per cent of whom were women, were tasked at the moment with civilian crisis management.

In civilian crisis management, Finland will continue to put a strong emphasis on the EU police operations in Afghanistan.

Finland is taking part in seven EU-led civilian crisis management operations including an EU mission to improve border security in Libya currently in the process of being deployed.
