Following an incident of online shopping fraud, the police on Saturday warned people to protect their personal data.

The police arrested the alleged criminal in Varkaus area on Friday on charge of buying goods, particularly electronics, worth more than 10,000 euros through online orders using the identity of another person.

The accused used information stolen from the victim’s letterbox in North Savo, said the police.

He also ordered goods through the post office in guise of a relative of the subscriber.

The police said the man had acted very methodically and told other subscribers that he was a newcomer to the city.

He also moved to Leppävirta, Pieksämäki and Kuopio areas with the intention of carrying out fraudulent activities.

The police said the 23-year-old accused hails from Jyväskylä and was suspected by the police for the same type of criminal activities in the past.
