Prime Minister Alexander Stubb has assured to offer negotiators necessary support to enable the Finnish dairy sector receive compensation from the EU in the aftermath of Russian counter-sanctions.

Speaking in a meeting of the Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners (MTK), the prime minister, however, warned against excessive expectation for the EU subsidy.

“The impact of Russian ban on imports will not be compensated in full,” said Stubb.

The premier, however, acknowledged that every cent is important for the producers in this situation. He said the issue for Finland as a member of the EU is a matter of principle and equal treatment.

MTK believes Agriculture and Forestry Minister Petteri Opro and Finnish negotiators have been unsuccessful in the negotiations regarding compensation and that the government has handled farmers’ issues poorly.
