The Court of Appeal on Wednesday ruled in favour of former mayor of Heinola, Tita Rinnevaara.

Rinnevaara won the compensation dispute against the municipality of Heinola after the court overturned an earlier ruling by a district court.

The Court of Appeal ruled that Rinnevaara is entitled to a year’s salary following the mayor’s dismissal from office.

In addition, the court ordered the municipality to pay Rinnevaara interest on arrears of more than 120,000 euros. Furthermore, the municipality has to pay the huge legal costs involved.

The dispute was related to the nature of the mayor’s contract. According to the district court, the mayor as per the contract was only guaranteed compensation, if she took the decision to resign on own initiative.

The Court of Appeal, on the other hand, ruled that the basis for compensation does not stipulate resignation.

Heinola Municipal Board Chair Raili Hildén said the municipal will delve in the Court of Appeal’s decision and contemplate a possible appeal.
