Minister of the Interior Päivi Räsänen and the Finnish Immigration Service want to speed up the deportation process, reported the Finnish language daily Turun Sanomat.

The immigration authorities especially want to accelerate deportation on the grounds of crime which constitutes about a third of all deportation cases in a year.

Currently, implementation of deportation may take up to three years.

According to Räsänen, making deportation effective is acknowledged in the current government programme.

Räsänen stated that deportation is particularly important in a situation where a person is a threat to the safety of the society. The minister said those who have received deportation orders stay too long becoming a burden to the society.

“In contrast to refusal of entry, the law on deportation allows the person to stay in the country during the appeal process,” said Olli Koskipirtti, head of the result unit at the Finnish Immigration Service.
