The willingness by Finns to donate to charity has increased, reported Keskisuomalainen, a Finnish language regional daily.

The refugee crisis and the increase of asylum seekers have been attributed to Finns wanting to donate more.

For instance, the Finnish Red Cross, UNICEF and children's rights organisation Plan have received significantly more donations than usual.

The Finnish Red Cross in September received about 400 new donors while morally just a few donors come in a week.

Plan has doubled the number of its new donors since the turn of the year, while UNICEF has received three times more one-time donations this year compared to the corresponding period of last year.

UNICEF has received approximately 100,000 euros since the beginning of September.

UNICEF spokesperson Minna Suihkonen told the newspaper that the organisation has been contacted more in the autumn with people seeking to become monthly donors or increase the sum of their donation.

According to Suihkonen, this has been partly due to the refugee crisis.
