The City of Helsinki is taking a big step towards a new mayor model, as the head of the city leadership has returned to preparations.

The city leadership chamber decided to reject Mayor Jussi Pajunen’s proposal for a new city management system.

All political parties stood behind the recovery proposal presented by the chamber president, Lasse Männistö.

The call for a new management system has come so that there would be a clear distinction between official preparations and decision-making when introducing the new mayoral model.

The council elects mayors and deputy mayors during every election period. This will be addressed again at the beginning of the December meeting of the city leadership chamber.

After that, the matter will be discussed by the city government and ultimately the city council.

The earliest the new mayor model could be used is after the municipal elections in the summer of 2017.
