The Ministry of the Environment has proposed forming a new expert body to take care of environmental permits in Finland, reported the Finnish language newspaper consortium Lännen Media.

The proposed authority would, among other things, be in charge of tasks now covered by the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre).

The new authority would also replace the current Safety and Chemicals Agency (TUKES).

The proposal means authorisations for both medium sized and large-scale operations would come from a single uniform authority.

This category includes, for example, environmental permits for mining operations.

Autonomous regions would be in charge of issues related to small-scale licensing.
