Former President Tarja Halonen on Saturday said she totally agreed with Helsinki police chief Lasse Aapio who criticised street patrols by civilians.

Talking to the national broadcaster Yle in its Ykkösaamu (morning breakfast programme), Halonen said instead of street patrols, a better way would be for Finns to help immigrants adapt, so that they would have an idea of what kind of society they are integrating into.

According to the Helsinki police chief who was interviewed by Yle, the oversight of public spaces is the duty of the police and security guards and not street patrols.

Halonen said it was difficult to oversee street patrols without the emergence of adverse effects.
