Prime Minister Juha Sipilä on Sunday said the government has put coercive legislative measures aimed at boosting competitiveness on hold indefinitely in order to see if the labour market organisations will come up with an alternative package.

Sipilä made the revelation during the Prime Minister’s Interview Hour programme on Yle Radio. He said it seems the labour market organisations are serious and working towards quick results.

According to Sipilä, there is time for negotiations but not too much. He, however, did not define a precise time limit for the negotiations.

The premier said the preparations for the coercive legislative measures have been frozen, because the government intends to speed up the fifth round of talks launched on January 28.

However, if an agreement is not reached, the government intends to continue with the preparations for the coercive legislative measures and submit the package before parliament in spring, he said.

The prime minister also spoke about accommodation of refugees in his Kempele house and said the house has not yet been used to accommodate asylum seekers.

Safety experts have assessed that the house currently cannot be used to shelter families with children.

Sipilä said he will be supporting the accommodation of large family elsewhere until the authorities assess the house to be safe for living.

He said he was surprised at how much international coverage the housing offer has aroused.

The offer is, however, still valid, said Sipilä.
